MAPFRE Sigorta Surpasses 2030 Carbon Goals Ahead of Schedule in Turkey

MAPFRE Sigorta has reached its long-term climate targets well ahead of schedule, cutting emissions from electricity use by 100 per cent and lowering its overall carbon footprint by 50 per cent in 2025. During the same period, the company also sorted more than 8 tonnes of waste and directed it to recycling and proper disposal channels, reinforcing its environmental performance in Turkey.

Aligned with the MAPFRE Group’s international sustainability strategy, the insurer is continuing to shrink its environmental impact, use resources more efficiently and embed sustainable business practices across its operations. Through its 2022–2026 Strategic Sustainability Plan and its “We Are Here” approach, the company is turning environmental, social, governance and business commitments into measurable outcomes.

Climate Targets Reached Before 2030

Although MAPFRE Sigorta had set a goal of reducing its carbon footprint by 40 per cent by the end of 2025 and by 48 per cent by 2030, it has already gone beyond those benchmarks. In 2025, the company eliminated the carbon footprint linked to electricity consumption entirely and reduced its total carbon footprint by half. It also supported a 6 per cent reduction in electricity consumption within the MAPFRE Group and contributed to a 2 per cent decrease in energy use associated with buildings and the vehicle fleet.

Erdinç Yurtseven, General Manager of MAPFRE Sigorta, emphasised that sustainability is embedded in the company’s decision-making, risk management and value creation model. He stated that the company backs its environmental, social and governance commitments with measurable targets and gives importance to making its impact visible in areas ranging from climate responsibility and inclusivity to customer experience and transparent management.

Yurtseven noted that reducing the company’s total carbon footprint by 50 per cent in 2025, thereby achieving its 2030 target early, is a clear sign of this commitment. He also pointed out that the company supports nature-based carbon offset initiatives. In 2025, MAPFRE Sigorta fully offset its annual carbon footprint through two projects: the Kayseri Molu Waste-to-Energy Project in Turkey, which offset 484 tonnes of carbon emissions, and the Tarahumar project in Mexico, which offset a further 153 tonnes.

Group-Wide Sustainability Progress

MAPFRE Group continues to advance its global sustainability agenda with a focus on energy efficiency, renewable energy and operational transformation as it works toward carbon neutrality by 2030. The Group outperformed its 2025 target of reducing energy consumption by 16 per cent, ultimately achieving a 27 per cent cut in the purchase of fossil-fuel-based energy sources such as electricity, natural gas and petrol.

Supported by increased renewable energy use, MAPFRE Group has lowered the carbon footprint from energy consumption in its offices by as much as 65 per cent. Across buildings in the 25 countries where it operates, the Group has also recorded a 32 per cent reduction in electricity costs.

Sustainable Buildings and Global Recognition

The Group is reinforcing its energy efficiency strategy through greener building upgrades. By 2025, 25 certified buildings carrying LEED, BREEAM or Energy Star labels are expected to represent 59 per cent of MAPFRE’s administrative building area. This transition is strengthening operational sustainability through improved water and energy management, lower emissions and the use of materials with reduced environmental impact.

MAPFRE’s sustainability performance has also gained international recognition. The Group earned a score of 81 in S&P Global’s Corporate Sustainability Assessment, marking a nine-point improvement and placing it among the world’s top 10 insurance companies. It was included in the Sustainability Yearbook 2025 for the sixth consecutive year, scored 3.9 points in the FTSE4Good Index above the sector average, and received an A- rating from the Carbon Disclosure Project at the Leadership level.
