BYD has introduced the Dolphin G DM-i, a new plug-in hybrid hatchback created specifically with European drivers in mind. Positioned in the competitive B segment, the model enters the market with a strong focus on fuel efficiency, practical daily use, and extended driving range.
The official launch is expected in June, while the first customer deliveries are planned for the end of the summer. With this release, BYD is aiming to strengthen its presence in Europe by offering a compact model that combines electric mobility with the convenience of hybrid technology.
Hybrid system with more than 1,000 kilometres of total range
The Dolphin G DM-i uses BYD’s Super Hybrid DM-i setup, pairing a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor. This configuration allows the car to handle short everyday trips in all-electric mode while also supporting long-distance travel without the range limitations associated with fully electric vehicles.

BYD says the total combined range exceeds 1,000 kilometres, making the model one of the most economical plug-in hybrid options in its class. This balance between electric-only capability and hybrid endurance is expected to be one of its key selling points in the European market.
Two versions aimed at different driving needs
The entry-level Active version produces 166 horsepower and is equipped with a 7.8 kWh battery. In electric-only driving, it can travel around 40 kilometres, which may suit users looking for an efficient urban and suburban commuter.

The more powerful Boost variant raises output to 212 horsepower and includes a larger 18 kWh battery. This version is expected to deliver about 90 kilometres of pure electric range, offering greater flexibility for drivers who want to reduce fuel use even further during daily journeys.
Size, features and European production plans
At 4.16 metres long, the Dolphin G DM-i is slightly larger than several familiar rivals, including the Renault Clio, Skoda Fabia and Toyota Yaris. The exterior continues BYD’s established design language, while the equipment list includes features such as a panoramic roof and a 360-degree surround-view camera.
The vehicle will be built at BYD’s new factory in Szeged, Hungary, underlining the company’s commitment to local production for the European region. Pricing is expected to fall between 23,000 and 25,000 euros, with sales beginning in the coming weeks and the first deliveries anticipated toward autumn.
