Munich Re has introduced several senior leadership changes across its Claims division, with all appointments set to take effect on June 1, 2026. The updates reflect a planned transition within the organisation as it continues to strengthen its global claims capabilities under its long-term strategic agenda.
Among the changes, Michal Mekota, currently serving as Head of Single Risks Claims, will step back from his position as he prepares to retire at the end of November. Until then, he will remain involved with the business as Senior Executive Consultant, working on strategic initiatives and reporting directly to Global Claims Chief Executive Claudia Hasse.
Leadership succession across key claims roles
Matthias Meyer has been named as Mekota’s successor for the Head of Single Risks Claims role. Munich Re said his appointment supports a seamless transition, supported by more than 20 years of experience in the insurance industry.
At the same time, Rolf Heintzeler will assume responsibility for Reinsurance Claims Europe & Latin America, taking over from Meyer. Heintzeler has spent more than 16 years with Munich Re and most recently led the company’s Insurance Consulting unit.
Strategic importance for Ambition 2030
Commenting on the appointments, Claudia Hasse expressed appreciation for Mekota’s long-standing contribution to the Claims organisation, noting that his knowledge and dedication will continue to support Munich Re through his advisory role during the transition period.
Hasse also welcomed Meyer and Heintzeler into their new positions, emphasizing that the company’s claims offering remains a core pillar of Munich Re’s Ambition 2030 strategy. She added that both leaders are expected to play an important part in advancing the organisation’s future direction.
