Sompo has named Thierry Grieder as Senior Vice President and Head of Casualty Treaty Reinsurance for Continental Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and Latin America, strengthening its leadership across several important international markets. The appointment reflects the company’s continued focus on expanding its casualty treaty reinsurance capabilities through experienced internal talent.
With more than ten years of industry experience, Grieder steps into the role after most recently serving as SVP, Senior Underwriter Casualty Reinsurance. Since joining Sompo in 2022 as Vice President, Casualty Treaty Underwriter, he has progressed within the organisation and now takes on broader regional responsibility.
Career Path Shaped by Reinsurance and Strategy Experience
Before moving to Sompo, Grieder spent seven years at Swiss Re, where his career began in Zurich as a Graduate Strategy Analyst. About a year and a half later, he advanced to the role of Corporate Strategy Analyst, building a foundation in strategic and analytical functions.
In 2017, he relocated to Paris to take on a Treaty Underwriter position. After nearly two years in that role, he was promoted to Senior Treaty Underwriter, a position he held for three years. This combination of underwriting and strategy experience has helped shape his progression into senior leadership.
Part of Sompo’s Broader International Leadership Expansion
Grieder’s appointment follows several other notable international leadership moves at Sompo. Among them is Bart Van Gysegem, who was appointed Country Manager, Insurance for Belgium and the Netherlands in early June and is based in Brussels. His role supports Sompo’s long-term development strategy in both markets, particularly after receiving regulatory approval last year to write primary insurance locally.
Another recent appointment is Elliot Paul, who was named Head of Marine Cargo, UK in May. Based in London, Paul joined as Sompo continues to strengthen its specialist expertise and enhance service for clients and brokers. These appointments underline the company’s wider commitment to building leadership depth across international business lines.
